误区一：对“所写内容在话题范围之内”的理解错误
有的学生认为话题作文不存在审题的问题，忽略了话题作文中材料和引题对话题的逻辑限制。甚至有人认为“在话题范围之内”就是只要在行文时出现了话题中的词语或判断，就算是符合要求的。这些都是错误的认识。
其实，话题作文也存在着审题的要求。我们认为话题作文的审题至少包括两个层面的要求：
一是对话题本身的理解。我们可以把话题分为两大类，一类是话题本身就是一个完整的判断，如“战胜脆弱”、“答案是丰富多彩的”，或话题本身隐含了一个已经为我们的社会规范限定的判断，如“诚信”、“人文素养与发展”。这样的话题作文其实已经把作文立意的方向确定了，我们只能在这个方向上作自己的延伸或拓展，我们称这样的话题为“伪话题”。另一类话题本身是开放的，或者说从话题来看，并没有给出判断。这样的话题我们称为“真话题”。
二是对话题之前的材料和引题的理解。有人认为话题作文只要关注话题本身就可以了，前面的材料是可有可无的。这是一种十分片面的理解。可以说任何一个话题作文所提供的材料都不是随意的，它或者对话题进行解释说明，或者对话题所涉及的内容作思维的定向，甚至是限定。而引题则更为重要，命题者的意图往往就隐含在其中。
误区二：对“可以编写故事”的理解错误
编写故事，并不意味着可以凭空想象，胡编乱造，脱离生活现实。有的学生不仅虚构故事，而且虚构的是荒诞离奇、远离生活的故事；有的学生频频地采用武侠、科幻的形式，动辄数百年前或百十年后。有的为了作文的需要，不惜让人间惨剧在自己的家庭重复上演。这些脱离了生活本真的虚构，都是对这一要求的误解。
其实我们所说的“真”，并不是否定作文中的虚构，而是说任何的虚构都应该是有生活来源的，是在现实生活中存在的。同时情感的生发、观点的形成也是有因可循有据可依的。用这两个标准去比照我们的作文，有一批是要完全排除在外的。因为有些作文所叙之事，明眼人一看就是为了作文而编造的，在生活中根本不可能发生。甚至有的学生说，看了这样的事自己也不会相信是真的，这样的作文有何真实可言？需要指出的是，有的学生作文中所叙之事也的的确确存在于生活中，比如父母双亡，车祸伤残，继承大笔遗产等，但诸如此类的事情发生的可能性并不大，这种“为赋新辞强说愁”的思维，就不仅仅是脱离生活造假的问题了，恐怕上升到做人的品格也不过分。
作文，我们更提倡叙真事、抒真情。作文是对现实生活的一种反映,而这种反映是一种“真实”与“本色”的不掺假不走味的反映，即生活的原汁原味。生活是文章写作取之不尽用之不竭的题材库,就看你能不能做生活中的有心人，给生活一份特别的关注。有些学生沉湎于虚构，主要是因为平时没有做生活的有心人，不勤于观察，不勤于思考，对自己经历的生活片断没有独到的发现,忽视了作为文章源泉的自身生活，眼光向天,不关注自己脚下坚实的大地，不关注自己身边发生的日常小事。其实，朱自清的散文名篇《背影》、鲁迅的《一件小事》，写的不都是小得不能再小的事吗?却全都成了名篇。所以,我们强调写身边的小事，写经历过的、有真切感受的东西,把握住了这些,我们就可能写得更为出色。“齐纨未足时人贵,一曲菱歌敌万金。”真实、本色是作文的高境界。真实应是学生作文的生命。当然,作文需要写真实的生活，但不是“照相式”地记录生活，过分强调是什么就写什么，想到什么就写什么，还须经过一番“去粗存精”的思考和加工。
误区三：对“文体自选”的理解错误
文体自选并非没有文体、不要文体，而是指可以从考生熟悉的各种文体中选择自己擅长的、适合表达内容的一种。很多考生写出的是被称为“四不像”的文章，这种没有文体意识或文体不纯的现象在话题作文中是普遍存在的。
《考试说明》对作文文体的要求是十分明确的：符合文体要求。从表达方式的运用角度来考察，我们一般把文章分为记叙文、议论文、说明文， 而这三种文体都是有一些基本的要求的。记叙文要求叙写一个完整的事件，有一定的顺序，有叙事的详略，语言形象生动。议论文要求有观点，有论据，有合理的层次结构，语言要严谨准确。说明文要有说明的对象，说明的顺序，说明的重点，语言要求准确生动。在实际写作中，有些学生选用了应用文体如日记、申请、倡议书、启事、报告等，也有一些学生使用了小说、寓言、戏剧、神话等文学性更强的体裁，这些从文体的创新上来说，都是可行的，但不管选用什么文体，都要遵循这种文体基本的特点，而不能随心所欲。
误区四：对“题目自拟”的理解错误
学生拟题随意，不考虑文章的内容，题目宽泛空洞，平淡无神，甚至有的直接以话题为题目。题目是文章的眼睛，是读者阅读的第一触点，拟一个好题目也是语言文化素养的体现。特别是考场作文，一个醒目贴切的好题目，显得尤为重要。
一个好题目的标准是：切合内容，切合文体，简洁醒目，形象生动，新颖独特。我们可总结归纳出下列的拟题方法，如：公式式、联想式、论点式、论题式、论辩式、关系式、比喻式、借代式、引用式、拟人式、仿用式、回环式、呼告式、故事式、应用文式、对联式等。总结历届高考优秀作文的命题，可以从以下几个方面来拟题：①直接提示文章主题，如《崇高的心灵选择――谈悲剧之美》（2002年）；②反映文章的主要内容，如《一毛钱与诚信》（2001年）；③以修辞等方式增强抒情性或标新立异，如《月若有情月长吟》（2002年）《点一盏心灯期待诚信》；④给人以思考，引人入胜，如《为韩寒让出一条道》（2000年）；⑤表明故事基本内容和情节，如《黄河需要诚信》（2001年）；⑥故事新编，给人以新的感受，如《赤兔之死》（2001年）《新愚公和智叟的故事》（2000年）；⑦以矛盾或不同于常理的说法出奇制胜，如《选择牢笼》（2002年）；⑧表明文章所采用的独特体裁，如《吊屈原赋》（2003年）。其实，现在使用的语文教材和读本中的大多数题目就是我们学习模仿的很好的例子，在平时的阅读中，大家多留意文章的题目，久而久之，就可以形成拟题的能力。
