Youth

In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young.

We Never Told Him He Couldn”t Do It
My son Joey was born with club feet. The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally - but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in surgery, casts and braces. By the time he was eight, you wouldn”t know he had a problem when you saw him walk .
The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. We never told him that he probably wouldn”t be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn”t know.
In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others - perhaps he sensed that the abilities that seemed to come naturally to so many others did not come naturally to him. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn”t tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn”t know.
He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day - even the day he had a 103-degree fever. I was worried, so I went to look for him after school. I found him running all alone. I asked him how he felt. "Okay," he said. He had two more miles to go. The sweat ran down his face and his eyes were glassy from his fever. Yet he looked straight ahead and kept running. We never told him he couldn”t run four miles with a 103-degree fever. So he didn”t know.
Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. He was in seventh grade - the other six team members were all eighth-graders. We never told him he shouldn”t expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn”t do it. We never told him he couldn”t do it…so he didn”t know. He just did it.

但有些教师在日常教学中往往将阅读教学与写作教学相分离,忽视了学生阅读能力与写作能力的协同发展。基于此,江苏省苏州市教科院在英语阅读与写作教学的结合方面作了一些有益的探索,以大市教研活动为契机,搭建“同题异构”的平台,研究探讨“读写结合”的高效课堂。
活动中,有两位教师分别就《牛津高中英语》模块九第三单元的阅读部分内容上了两堂公开课。教学任务旨在通过阅读使学生了解法国、美国和印度尼西亚的国旗以及他们国旗上的颜色所表示的含义与文化内涵,同时引导学生借鉴文章语言、结构和话题,进行句子、段落、语篇等“读写结合”的写作训练。两位教师立足阅读文本,优化课堂设计,处理好输入与输出的关系,分别在阅读前、阅读中和阅读后,精心选择读写结合点,搭建阅读与写作的桥梁。本文摘取其中的教学片段,阐述教师如何将阅读与写作巧妙整合,阅读如何为写作铺垫,写作又如何成为阅读的一部分。

二、读中悟写——搭建阅读与写作的桥梁
英语课程标准提高了对写作的要求,突出了对遣词造句、谋篇布局和情感表达的要求。在阅读过程中,教师应注意挖掘阅读材料内部的写作因素,通过设计各项微型教学活动,引导学生从范文中获取词汇、句型、篇章结构等写作资源,搭建词汇、句子和篇章支架。教师在课堂设计时还应充分考虑阅读过程中关注的内容(词、句、章等知识)在写作过程中加以运用,语篇结构信息的提取和分析活动是否构建写作目标文体所需要的。[2]
通过阅读教学使学生在写作过程中体会如何选择材料,确定中心,围绕中心安排组织材料,准确地选择词语,写出通顺的句子,连句成段,连段成篇。
1. 立足文本,提炼篇章结构
教师在阅读教学时引导学生进行语篇分析,从理解整篇内容入手,分析段际关系,找出主题句,总结段落大意,把握作者的谋篇布局思路,总结概括文章大意,通过剖析阅读材料的结构让学生掌握同类文章的写作格局。

(PPT) Reading strategy II: The main idea of a paragraph is often expressed in the topic sentence. The topic sentence is usually the first or the last sentence, sometimes in the middle.
正确把握文章的主旨是阅读和写作的重点,教师引导学生浏览文章的标题及第一段知晓文章的主题是国旗、颜色的不同含义以及所代表的文化。然后,教师借助汉堡包生动、直观地分析文章的层次结构,引导学生从整体上把握语篇的发展脉络。教师在引导学生理解篇章结构的设计上关注写作的提取,PPT上呈现的两点阅读策略其实也是学生在写作时要牢记在心的写作基本要求,即写作时要注意文章标题的拟定及文章第一段落的内容,要能开门见山地介绍文章的主题。接下去各段落的展开要围绕主题,同时段落要有主题句,通常在段首或段尾,有时会在段落中,最后一段一般是对文章主题的一个总结性的阐述。这样学生通过接下去的细读文章对如何写起始段、当中段落和结论就有了较深入的感悟。
2. 基于文本,挖掘重点句型
阅读材料的语言和知识是写作的基础,提高写作能力的前提是充足的词汇量和丰富的句型。在阅读教学中,教师用丰富的教学活动让学生在阅读过程中接触大量相关的词汇与句式信息,引导学生学会欣赏作者的语言特色,对比不同的词汇在不同语境中的作用和意义,从而为学生在实际写作中活用词汇、活用句式打下良好的基础。

教师充分挖掘教材的闪光处,在学生细读文章后,分享文中描述国旗和颜色的优美文句及经典句型。引导学生关注句中有下划线的单词或短语,通过对这些精彩语句的评点来提高学生的鉴赏能力,让学生明白多样化的句式会使文章生动有趣,充满活力。同时,教师把握契机,适时布置简短的写作训练:The world is full of colors. What is your favorite color? Please work in groups and write down your group members’ favorite color and reasons.学生通过阅读,对相关词汇和地道的句式有了一定的感性认识,在描写同伴最喜欢的颜色和原因时自然就运用上了所学的单词和句型,实现读写有机结合。

教师在阅读教学中捕捉阅读中的关键词和关键句,同时善用“词”的转换,通过词与词的转换、词与从句的转换来丰富句式,让学生接触多种语言风格,熟练掌握每一种语言表达方式,明确区别,扎实地积累语言材料,在运用中发展学生的语言能力。

在细节阅读Indonesia部分,教师让学生阅读文本后运用不同的句式回答对于印度尼西亚国旗含义的不同解释的问题。教师在阅读理解问题的设计上充分关注不同句型在写作中的运用。在学生回答问题后,针对高三学生因为学习任务繁重不参加体育锻炼的情况,教师创设情境让学生仿照句型造句:假设你是班长,请根据你的了解向校长汇报同学对于是否参加体育锻炼的看法。活学活用的写作训练让学生更清晰地领悟文中句型的作用。学生在“读”中悟写的过程中,不是机械地照搬原文,而是经过自己的感悟,恰当地模仿好词好句,感悟写作魅力。
三、读后练写——增强篇章写作实战
教师通过“初读感知—细读理解—精读品味”的阅读顺序,遵循学生由浅入深的认知规律,指导学生掌握略读或粗读的方法。通过“读”,学生对文章的选材、内容布局、语言组织有了一些可借鉴的经验,形成一种量的积累。但要完成质的飞跃,还需要通过篇章写作实践来落实。英语写作能力一般是通过“词”“句”“篇”循序渐进的训练发展的。学习词汇是基础,句型应用是过渡或桥梁,篇章是目的。因此,教师应指导学生正确解析词句的作用,把握篇章结构,掌握连段成篇的方法,并把阅读中学到的写作基本方法运用到自己的习作中去。准确灵活地运用语言进行行之有效的谋篇布局。[3]
1. 随文仿写
阅读材料不仅是教的蓝本,读的范本,更是写作的范文。教师应在设计时找准文章中和学生的写作实际密切联系的交合点,引导学生模仿文章结构、写作风格和隽言妙语来谋篇布局进行仿写训练。
【案例】
If you are asked to write something about Chinese national flag, what would you write? (discuss in groups)?
(1)What’s our national flag called?
(2)What’s it like? Where are the stars?
(3)What do the colors symbolize?
(4)What do the stars stand for?
(5)When and how do we celebrate our National Day?
教师在指导学生完成范文阅读后,因地制宜地要求学生仿照书本对三个国家国旗的介绍,完成对自己伟大祖国——中国国旗的介绍。
教师参照阅读文章呈现写作模式图,指导写作过程。设计内容:OutlineWords/PhrasesSentencesParagraph(Topic Paragraph/Supporting Paragraph/ Conclusion)。帮助学生逐步建立思维框架:第一部分是引言(introduction)或主题句(topic sentence),第二部分是扩展句(supporting sentence),介绍the origin of the Chinese national flag和 the meanings of the Chinese national flag,第三部分为结尾句(conclusion)。[4] 然后通过提供问题布置小组讨论,让学生充分借鉴文章结构和语言,灵活运用文章中的高级词汇、复杂句式或精彩片段。学生在写作时很自然地模仿文章,融入文章中优美词句,顺利完成关于 中国国旗的写作任务。通过写作,学生进一步理解中国国旗的象征意义,爱国主义情操得到提升。
2. 拓展式写作
在学生把握阅读材料话题知识、篇章结构,掌握重点词组句型,欣赏遣词造句等的前提下,教师应设计“做写结合”教学任务,引导学生进行整体吸收与运用,借鉴话题进行拓展活动。这样不仅充实阅读教学的内涵,而且实现从阅读向写作的延伸。

Task I: Design a flag for your class. (pattern, colors and meanings ... )

基于学生通过阅读,对各国国旗图样、历史、颜色、含义及影响等有了较深入的了解,教师布置“做写”结合的开放式写作任务,先要求学生小组合作设计班旗,然后指导学生用英语从图样、颜色和含义等方面描述班旗,最后为了使学生有更大的学以致用的交际空间,设计给美国朋友写信介绍班旗这一情景。在这个过程中,学生在阅读中通过阅读范文和分析词汇、句型、篇章结构等完成输入活动,制作班旗并且用英语介绍班旗等活动进行语言内化活动,最后的信函写作则实现了语言输出活动,真正体现了“输入—内化—输出”这样的语言学习过程。[5]
阅读与写作是相辅相成、相互促进的。读可以为写提供参考模式,读可以给写以更多的启发。教师在读写结合的英语教学过程中要做好引路人,要找到二者的契合点,精心设计相关写的任务来强化学生读的收获,引导学生从接触到领悟,从模仿到创造,通过“读前知写”“读中悟写”“读后练写”,让写作实实在在地走进英语阅读教学,让学生从阅读中学会写作,在阅读中感知写作,从阅读走向写作。长此以往,学生就会读起来情趣盎然,写起来笔下生花。
