动机，在心理学上一般被认为涉及行为的发端、方向、强度和持续性。动机为名词，在作为动词时则多称作“激励”。在组织行为学中，激励主要是指激发人的动机的心理过程。激发和鼓励是人们产生一种内在驱动力，并使之朝着所期望的目标前进的过程。根据心理学的定义，动机是主体行动的内在力量，是引发和维系主体行为并将其导向和达到某种目标的意念或愿景，体现着主体所需要的客体内容对其活动的激励功能。由此可以认为，一个人某种动机的存在与否和强度高低，是以其对目标的选择与否和为实现所选择的目标所付出的努力程度来衡量的。以成就动机为例，成就动机指的是一个人乐意去做自己认为是重要的、有价值的事，并力求成功的一种内在动因。具有成就动机的人积极进取，自信心强，勇于接受挑战，面对挫折和困难能表现出极大的韧性和毅力。英语学习不是一件简单的事情，反复地朗读、反复地学习，有可能会让儿童失去耐心而烦躁，长时间的练习后还是学不会将会导致儿童产生挫败感，再也不愿意继续学习。此时，教师要激发儿童的成就动机，在儿童获得成功体验时，应作出积极评价，让他们感觉到自己的能力，为自己感到骄傲和自豪。如果儿童在学习某一个单词或者某一句话失败时，教师不要失去耐心或者责罚他们，而应调整学习方法或者降低学习目标。
