一、开展双语应用文写作的可行性

1.将双语模式应用于应用文写作教学符合高校素质教育和教学改革的要求

双语教学是高校推进素质教育的着陆点之一。教育部《关于加强高等学校本科教学工作提高教学质量的若干意见》(教高(2001)4号)明确指出:“本科教育要创造条件使用英语等外语进行公共课和专业课教学。”双语应用文写作授课过程中,教师尽量以英语作为课堂第一教学语言,通过课堂讲解,互动问答,扩大了学生英语语言信息输入量,拓展了英语专业课和公共外语课之外的英语交流平台,为学生提供了一个良好的英语交互空间。

2.大多非英语专业的学生具有英语应用文写作学习的需求

一般来说,高校的公共外语写作课以讲授英文的基础文体写作为主,很少会涉及应用文体写作这部分内容。笔者的课堂调查结果表明,选课前,87.65%的学生没有接触过英语应用文,7.3%的学生连普通英文信件的格式都不清楚。双语应用文写作中、英应用文体双管齐下,弥补了传统应用文教学和公共外语教学很少涉及英语应用文的不足,打破了非英语专业学生与英语应用文“零接触”的局面,引导学生走出英语应用文即汉语应用文“中翻英”过程的误区,使学生掌握英语的应用文写作的基本规范,为其备考研究生打下基础。

3.两种语言的应用文体写作教学能够达到和谐共融、相辅相成

应用文体的用法没有国界,汉语应用文要求简洁和程式化,使用公务事务语体,而英语应用文写作遵循6C原则(6Cs' principle),即完整(completeness)、准确(correctness)、明晰(clearness)、简洁(conciseness)、礼貌(courtesy)、体谅(consideration)。由此可见,二者都是因“用”而生,虽然格式有别,写作目的、写作内容和写作原则都存在很大的一致性。双语应用文写作既要突出具有相同功能的应用文体在中、英两种语言中写作的共性,也要强调因两种语言体系影响而导致表达方式的差别。所以,汉语应用文的教学与英语应用文的教学在本课中是相辅相成、相得益彰的。

4.高校的师资基础和教学资源为本课的外文教材编写提供了保障

外文教材是双语教学的一个必要条件。目前双语应用文写作直接引进适用的外文教材比较困难,高校教师可以依托本校资源自主编写适合学生状况、突出课程特点的教材。当然,自主编写外文教材,要注意把好语言关,避免中国式英语,最好请外籍教师合作或审稿,保证编写质量。

二、教学实践中遇到的问题及作业的探索

双语应用文写作教学尚处于初步探索阶段,教学实践中,每学期授课主体不同,显现的问题也不尽相同。通过对当前选课学生问卷调查,以往选课学生追踪调查所得到的信息进行研究、分析,我们发现语言突破和兴趣维持是开展双语应用文写作教学面临的两大主要问题,针对问题,笔者做了如下有益尝试:

1.破除教学中的语言障碍,实现写作教学的目的

语言障碍是双语教学老生常谈的问题。据有关院校调查表明,学生在双语专业课学习中流失较严重,主要原因是学生对英语的适应能力不足。如何排除学生在双语应用言语写作学习中的语言障碍,顺利的完成应用文写作教学的任务呢?

(1)协调母语与目标语互为主体的关系,灵活运用,讲求实效

单纯选用英语作为教学语言将会给学生理解应用文写作知识增加一定难度,特别是写作教学术语的把握。有些学生一上课就忙于查找和记录英语生词的中文解释,根本无暇顾及学科知识,甚至出现对学科知识误解的现象。应当明确的是应用文写作才是本课的教学主体,所有的教学目的、方法和手段都是围绕应用文写作教学展开的,为了不使学生学科知识受到本质影响,教师应及时捕捉学生的课堂反应,结合实际,适当地用母语讲解课程,保证写作教学的顺利展开。

(2)了解选课学生的英语水平,因地制宜,有的放矢

选课学生来自于全校各个院系,对英语的掌握程度不一,甚至还有相差悬殊的可能,所以,在授课之初,老师一定要对学生的英语听、说、写状况有个大体把握,根据学生的语言水平,设计课堂问题、选择适当的范文案例,布置练习作业。

绪论部分教师就可以设置问题的形式,启发式的阐释什么是应用文,应用文都包括哪些类别,应用文写作的意义等。例如:

双方交流中,一来学生可以积极主动思考,二来教师也大致了解了学生的英语水平,进而综合考虑群体的英语状况和接受能力,选择课堂表达词汇的难易程度,语速快慢。学生对用英语讲授应用文写作课的方式还不熟悉,特别是课堂内容理解时,普遍存在英文――中文的思维转换过程,教者在把握了学生英语水平的基础上,根据学生实际情况在句与句之间设置好留给学生的反应时间,保证所讲的每一句话学生都能听懂,每一个知识点学生都能领会。并且,学生回答问题时要及时鼓励,对正确的回答给予充分的肯定,增强学生学习的信心。

(3)增加课堂训练分量,以练代讲,及时互动

认知心理学把学习者从知识的理解到产出之前的阶段称为“孵化期”,这个阶段越短,记忆效果越好。对于双语应用文写作来说,课后作业是学生信息反馈的一种方式,但课堂练习能更加及时、有效地深化学生对课堂知识的理解。比如邀请信(Chinese invitation&/Vs English invitation)一节,很多学生都是第一次接触到正式的英文邀请信,所以,教师应确保学生能够真正掌握其格式、内容并能够拟写出合格的英文邀请信。讲解后,教师可以在黑板上给出一个情景假设:

2.选用恰当的方式方法,激发学生学习兴趣

双语应用文写作是一门新课,因其新,一开始学生们的兴趣十分浓厚,但这种新鲜感能否长久对教师来说是一种考验。据调查,100%的选课学生都已意识到应用文写作的重要性,但“由于不是专业课,很多同学都不是很重视”,而且即使是中文系的学生,应用文也还是一块很陌生的领域。于是,教师在尽力扫除学生语言障碍的同时,还应注意讲授内容的安排设置,难度应由浅入深,由学生较熟识的事物逐步过渡到其不易接触的事物。例如,在文种选择上,可以先讲授请假条(leave permit)、自荐信(application),然后才是备忘录(memorandum)、邀请信(invitation)、欢迎辞(welcoming speech)等。不要一开始就提高学习难度,对于不易掌握的知识,学生极易丧失学习信心,甚至产生厌学情绪,一旦如此,接下去的教学也就无法展开了。

苏霍姆林斯基在《给教师的建议》一书中曾说:“学生们把你所教的学科看作是最感兴趣的学科,让尽量多的少年向往幸福一样幻想着在你所教的这门学科领域里有所创造,做到这一点是你应当引以为荣的事。”

使学生对一门课程感兴趣的最好方法,就是使这门学科实用。授课时,为身处校园的学生,虚拟出工作生活中将遇到的种种可能,创设情景环境,当学生亲身体会到了中、英应用文写作的实用价值,认识到双语应用文对学习、生活及将来服务于社会的重大意义和作用时,他们就会自觉、主动、积极地继续学习。例如,对于学生请假条(leave permit)并不陌生,如果老师一上课就说:

“Today, we will learn how to write leave permit in both Chinese and English.”学生们也许会作不屑反应:“这有什么好学的。”其实,老师的这句话讲早了。如果我们先给学生创设一种质疑环境,效果会完全不同:

假设一名同学因故不能上课(可能把构思缺席原因的权利交给学生,以激发其想象力),请以该生名义给中文老师和外教分别写一份请假条。

于是,学生在操作过程中,写作方面的问题逐步暴露,有些作品是正效益的,有些是零效益,有些甚至是负效益的。学生在情景中发现了问题,产生出强烈的求知欲望,此时,教师再提出学习请假条写作,学生们就会有一种需要被满足的愉悦。
