During the Warring States Period (475-221BC), there was a man called Yue Yangzi in State Yue. One day he saw a piece of gold on the road and picked it up. He took it home and gave it to his wife. But his wife was not happy. The virtuous2 woman said, "I hear that a man of morality doesn't drink a thief's water and a man of probity3 refuses to accept alms. What do you think of the action of picking up another's lost valuable and possessing it for one's own?"
Yue Yangzi, feeling ashamed, sent the gold back to where he found it.
the next year, Yue Yangzi felt that he should go out and visit scholars to enrich his knowledge. So he set off.
A year later, he came back home suddenly.
"Why have you returned?" asked his wife in surprise, "You've only spent one year studying with scholars."
"I come back because I missed you very much."
Without saying anything, his wife took a pair of scissors and went to the loom4 at which she had worked. Pointing at the half done brocade, she proclaimed : "This brocade is woven from the finest silk. I wove one strand5 after another to produce the brocade. Now if I cut it, all my previous work will be wasted. It's the same with your studies. You can acquire knowledge only through diligence. Now, you've stopped halfway. Isn't it the same as cutting the brocade on the loom?"
Yue Yangzi was moved by what she said. He again left home to visit scholars. Several years later he became a learned man.
During the time of the Warring States (475-221 BC), there lived a well-known archer2 named Geng Ying whose art in shooting was excelled by none at his time.
One day, as he was standing3 by the side of the King of Wei, a flock of swan geese were flying over. With confidence, Geng Ying said to the king, "The twang of my bow-string might bring down a bird." The King doubted much. Just then a solitary4 swan goose appeared, low and slow in its flight, sad and dolorous5 in its cry. Instantly Geng Ying bended his bow and forcibly pulled the bowstring. Twang! High up went he shrilling6 sound into the air and down fell the bird to the ground. The king admired with bewilderment. Gang Ying then explained: "The bird was flying low and slow, because it was already hurt; it was crying in a bitter tone, because it had lost its companions. Due to the fact that it was already hurt and sad at heart, the twang of my strong bow, that birds dreaded7 most, startled it. The shrilling sound made its heart beat fast, its wings weak, its balance uneven8. Thus it fell down just as commonly as a man drops his chop-sticks, at the thunder-stroke, at a dinner table." Henceforth comes the idiom "A bird startled by the mere twang of a bow-string", illustrating9 a case where a man who had been previously10 and repeatedly frightened became numb11 and stupefied by a new thing of the same nature not knowing how to face the new situation.

At first,he could see small fish here and there all around. However, the deeper he dived ,the darker it became, and the colder the river water. At last,it was pitch-dark all around, and he could see nothing. He became frightened, and was at a loss where he should swim to.Just at that time,he noticed a round object which was glittering not far away.He fixed3 his eyes on it,and saw it was a bright pearl. He held his breath and swam over there, held the pearl with both hands, pulled it with a great effort, and the bright pearl come into his arms.He came out from the water immediately, climbed up the bank, and made off for home at once.
His father saw the bright pearl, and asked where he had got it.He told his father the whole story exactly as it had happened.Hearing this, his father said repeatedly,"How dangerous it was! This precious pearl was grown on the chin of the black dragon. The black dragon must have been sleeping when you were pulling the pearl. If the black dragon were awake, you would be dead."When the son heard this,he considered himself very lucky indeed.
This story appears in The Works of Zhuang Zi.From this story, later generations have derived4 the set phrase "groping about the chin of the black dragon to get a pearl-- bringing out the best" to indicate that an article is to the point.
